release notes

Default 0002 is the second release by Pokk! on SM-LL’s Default series, and his first solo concept album. Presented here are seven studio explorations, focused around notions of shifting perception. All these tracks have been developed from a small selection of sketches first created and shared through his blog www.mono-log.org.

mono-log.org was active for just over two years, and during that time gave away some 456 studio sketches. These sketches, still available for download today, are primarily based around creations in the Nord G1 synthesizer, a virtual modular system released by Clavia back in 1997.

Default 0002 is also available accompanying the limited artwork of 9, titled dot.spot.period created by artist Kimvi Nguyen.

“To posit a repetition is to enter the abstract and perfect world of art, a world where the text can appear and reappear despite the ongoingness of the ‘real world’. And yet, without this repetition, without the two-in-the-place-of-one, the one cannot come to be, for it is only by means of difference that identity can be articulated.”

release notes

Default 0005 (Phases) is the first release presented solely as the digital offshoot project ‘Default’ itself, as apposed to any specific artist.

Unlike a new alias or an artist’s new sound under a different label for example, this approach of using the label as the artist name, allows material sometimes left without a home a chance to be heard. Therefore, Phases is neither Pokk! or Typeface material, but falls somewhere on the edges.

Each track has been created through a combination of either reworking material from uploads found at www.mono-log.org, or creating new material from reworked Nord Modular patches. Finally each track has then been worked into a 33 minute mix format.

This six track mixed release also comes included with some raw edit versions as bonus material (only available to buyers).

All tracks are patched, jammed and mixed for Default by Martin J Thompson. This is a Default release on the label SM-LL 2014.

release notes

SM-LL is pleased to present Default 0006, the second 2 track release from artist en creux.

Interacting patterns and micro noise are heard in broken waves controlled from duel LFO’s and ADSR’s on her MFB Kraftzwerg. Her familiar repetitive quality remains but here we are subjected to a louder and more striking experience as sounds seem displaced yet focused, shifting in ways not immediately detectable.

Although continuing on her interest in doubling, en creux moves away slightly from her sine tone based textures of Default 0003 to deliver a sound more akin to the noisier moments found on her excellent 2011 release Colour of Quantum on Murmur Records, Japan.

All tracks written for Default by en creux. Produced and mastered by Martin J Thompson. This is a Default release on the label SM-LL 2015.

release notes

SM-LL is proud to welcome and present the first release on the ‘Batch’ format from new artists R.E.C. Batch 0000 is a raw, edgy, repetitive sound, and one that we feel fits SM-LL very well.

On the 12” each side is cut at different speeds allowing 4 versions of 1 track to be played.

12” clear vinyl comes with a personalised etched message for pre-orders only. Each messages must be a maximum of 3 words.

SM-LL is very pleased to welcome back artist ‘Durusin’ for the second release on the ‘Batch’ format, Batch 0001.

Durusin has sculpted a refreshing combination of dub-electronic and modular sound, balancing between melodic moods and minimal rhythmical pattern. From the more energetic pace of ‘Kivo’ to the calm tones of ‘Wazzld’, we feel both the 12” and digital offer a unique listening experience specific to its format.

The beautifully cut clear 12” vinyl comes as a 3 track release + 5 track digital extended package. There is also the option for a 5 track digital only version available for the more digital listener. credits released September 25, 2015

  3. Fahrplan
  4. W⇌H
  5. Line U8.2

release notes

London based label SM-LL presents its third release on the small run vinyl Batch format ‘Reloc - Batch 0002’.

Reloc is the new collaborative project of SM-LL label owner Martin J Thompson a.k.a Pokk!, Typeface, and wife Lucia H Chung a.k.a en creux.

Drawing inspiration from Berlin’s U8 metro train, Reloc - Batch 0002 insists a limited use of oscillators in its sound, primarily that of the pulse wave. Batch 0002 delivers clinical and repetitive pulse wave rhythmical patterns ranging from extreme high, grating mid and low frequency structures. The opening ‘Line U8’ with its strict 4/4 pulses and buzz, maintains a prolonged stasis before plunging into restrained change. ‘Bahnsteig’ continues with this approach yet in a more broken fashion before moving into the calmer territories of ‘Fahrplan’.

In addition to the 3 tracks on the 12”, the digital version provides an additional recording of the actual U8 train with an additional 2 works ‘W⇌H’ and ‘U8.2’, further simplifying and focusing on the core ideas presented in the release.

3 tracks included on the 12” clear cut vinyl.

release notes

We have been busy working with our distributor SRD, secretly preparing something especially for listeners who use/prefer digital music services such as iTunes, Spotify et al.

We are eager to learn more about these data services for ourselves, understand and use our own experiences as we develop, but continue to support those who support us first and foremost.

The result is a new compilation format (System) only available through these data services, called SYS 0000.

SYS 0000 collects 11 selected tracks from all artists and releases on SM-LL so far. Featuring Durusin, Phases, Pokk!, Typeface, en creux, R.E.C and Reloc.

All tracks have been remastered at SM-LL from the original files.

We will announce each digital data service provider as they appear.

We hope SYS 0000 finds new listeners and new listening environments.

Enjoy.

Selected, systematised and re-mastered at SM-LL.

release notes

London based label SM-LL presents its first main label 12” release from label owner Martin J Thompson a.k.a Pokk! with remix by Yves De Mey (Sandwell District, Line, Spectrum Spools) Pokk! has also released with SonuoS (2013), An Epic (2014), and previously with Dragon’s Eye Recording (2011) as half of minimal electronic duo Mimosa Moize with his wife Lucia H Chung. Pokk! also records under projects including Typeface and Reloc, a new collaborative project with Chung.

Pokk! - SM-LL 0000 is the first main label 12” release on SM-LL. Furthering his deep interests in rhythm, repetition and reduction, Pokk! crafts white noise with clinical tone bass percussive elements to form shifting patterns alike that of Steve Reich, and creates a particular sonic rawness parallel to ‘The Works’ by JB3. This 4-track release spans from intense rhythmical drive such as ‘203’, calm and broken structures found in ‘172’ and ‘207’, to a classic Yves De Mey heavy bass pulsating remix created using a Nord Modular patch provided by Pokk! Their mutual passions for the Nord Modular system brings Pokk! and Yves De Mey together, crossing creative paths for the first time.

SM-LL, now in its 3rd year, has slowly established its reputation through numerous digital (Default) and small-run vinyl (Batch) releases. SM-LL continues to operate around core values: small tokens of exchange, mutual respect, a passion for music and ultimately creating and releasing music for the right reasons.

All patched and generated within the Nord Modular environment. 228r remixed and re-patched by Yves De Mey. Mastering by Stefan Betke at Scape Mastering. Photography Elliot Jay Stocks

  1. “…think Kompakt, but uses a much more austere sound, so one could also imagine early Alva Noto, ø, Pan Sonic, early Thomas Brinkmann, SND (though perhaps not as early) or Goem, or releases on the latter’s label Audio.NL (if anyone remembers that)… superficially liking this doesn’t seem to be an option I would think” - Frans de Waard
  2. “a true masterpiece where static, rigidly phased rhythms intertwine with one another… glitch noises which bring to mind neutrotransmitters seem like a collection of inorganic rhythms” - Yoshio Machida

release notes

London based label SM-LL returns to the Default format with ‘Default 0007’ by new Denmark based SM-LL artist ‘Vialan’.

Vialan has been working with SM-LL these past 11 months, exchanging music and ideas, and Default 0007 is a small selection from this exchange.

Some of the dialogue revolved around how iconic Roland machines are used in his work, such as compurhythm’s, space echo’s etc, but much of this exchange utilised software development principles such as agile, MVP (minimum viable product), shipping early, and how this might apply or be used in creating and curating music and music release.

Often in music, there is notion of only delivering when it has been perfected, when it is at its best, that only then should it be heard by the public. This has never been the practice at SM-LL.

In the 11 months exchange, it was more the exchange itself, the desire to ship as early as possible, the openness to development and critique, that is Default 0007 and the Default format as a whole.

It seems perfect that Vialan should find a home at SM-LL, and we are very excited by what comes next.

All tracks are created by Vialan from his basement, kitchen table, meeting room, or wherever suitable. Mastering by SM-LL.

digital tracks:

release notes

SM-LL presents Batch 0003 from Berlin based artist ‘AND REA’.

AND REA delivers 4 tracks experimenting with minimal rhythmical repetition and structure via live studio jamming.

The 12” includes 2 tracks ‘QB’ and ‘SG’, both delivering slightly more controlled and refined sounds of square wave bass, high frequency ping, short delay and resonating sustain, versus the more erratic and dynamic qualities found in the digital only inclusion of ‘q+b’ and ‘s+g’.

It is also worthy of note, the 12” also shows unexpected signs of the sounds cut into it, lines which are at 90 degrees to the grooves. These lines join and separate when significant patterns in the music have found their place during the cut. It looks as good as it plays.

All sounds on repeat by AND REA. Mastered by SM-LL.

Adam Asnan (1983, UK) is an electroacoustic musician and location sound recordist, based between London and Berlin. His work promotes the aesthetic potential of recorded, amplified sound, the auditory ‘image’ and the virtues of both acoustic and synthetic spatialisation.

Batch 0004 is a work that continues to utilise a digital reverb (and multi-effects) unit from 1995, created specifically for the SM-LL Batch catalogue. This occasion offers only the palette of a ‘vernacular’ FM synthesis, put into repetitious arrangements for the part-crystalline-part-powdery reverbs to play upon.

SM-LL presents Batch 0005 from London-based artist Ex Geo.

Ex Geo is an alias of Jimmy Billingham (HOLOVR), a project exploring repetition, non-linear rhythm and random variation through digital modular synthesis.

Batch 0005 sees Ex Geo exploring a more minimal aspect of his sound creation, a ‘palette-cleanser’ between working on HOLOVR material. Employing random variation of parameters, all the tracks are recorded live on self-playing Nord Micro Modular patches to create organic-sounding textures and atmospheres. Analogue reverb and delay is utilised to naturalise the digital origin. credits
